On 15th March 2017 Chwarae Teg and Dark Sky Wales delivered Sky’s Her Limit with Hawthorn High School, Pontypridd. Working with 120 girls throughout the day to deliver an interactive programme of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) based events for girls, inspiring the next generation of female scientists.

During the day we were joined by 3 fantastic women from the world of STEM. Who came to share their career journeys and deliver a STEM based workshop for the girls. Guest speakers included:

Charlotte Poole, Dwr Cymru

Gemma Williams, Dwr Cymru

Catherine Tryfona, Cardiff Metropolitan University

Workshops on the day included:

Risk catchment with Dwr Cymru

As catchment risk coordinators our activity is identifying risks within the catchment. We gave the girls a clip board with a catchment risk checklist which we use in the field. We have created a catchment map with rivers and reservoirs which will have several activities on it such as farming, industrial use etc. The aim is for the groups to identify these risks and how they may impact on the raw drinking water quality. We can then explain how they may pose a threat and how we would use science to eliminate or reduce their impact. We then create a pollution scenario using the map and props to see how they would react and time depending present two possible planning applications, which one would they approve and why.

Smartphone Technology with Cardiff Metropolitan University

Technology and computers are all about solving problems and empowering society. Smartphones and tablets are some of the most popular computing devices and are packed full of exciting technology.  Using a “toolkit” of commonly-used sensor technology within modern smartphones, including GPS, accelerometers and cameras, students will be asked to work in small teams to come up with an exciting new idea for a mobile phone app to address a real world problem, relating to health, education or entertainment.

Planetarium exploring the night sky with Dark Sky Wales

Dark Sky Wales digital Planetarium is an immersive experience where the wonders of the universe come to life. Participants will explore the mythology of the heavens before delving deep into our astrophysical understanding of the universe around us.
