Tell your friends, tell your daughter, tell your sister… #LeadHerShip is back!

Are you a young woman aged 18-25? Have you ever wondered how decisions for your local area are made?

Chwarae Teg’s LeadHerShip is giving young women an opportunity to learn about Welsh Politics at a local Government level, and gain first-hand experience from inspiring role models within public life. Our LeadHerShip participants will shadow a Local Council Leader for a day to find out what life is really like as a decision maker.

Local authorities are responsible for local education, care services, leisure facilities, taking care of our streets and environment, local housing and developing business in our regions. Decisions made in these areas affect the day-to-day lives of women across Wales, therefore it is crucial that their voices are heard.

At the moment, only 18% of Council Leaders in Wales are women, and 28% of Councillors are women. Improving young women’s engagement with politics at a local level is key to increasing representation in the future.

What is LeadHerShip?

LeadHerShip is a shadowing opportunity for young women to gain a better insight into public life. Our first ever LeadHerShip programme took place in February at the National Assembly for Wales and was a huge success, with 100% of participants saying they hope to see the programme run again.

This time we’re taking LeadHerShip to local Government to give young women the opportunity to learn about welsh political life at every level.

The day will provide participants with one-to-one time with their Council Leader and their team, to gain an understanding of what the role includes. LeadHerShip will take place on a weekday in September or October, with a date being confirmed between the selected participants and Council Leaders.

How can I apply?

Any woman, aged between 18-25 and living in Wales, is eligible to apply. All you need to do is send us a short paragraph about why you would like the opportunity to shadow your local Council Leader and what it would mean to you.

You can do this by completing our application form and emailing the completed form to emma.tamplin@chwaraeteg.com by 5pm, Monday 17th September.

Winners will be selected by Chwarae Teg and will be contacted within a couple of weeks.

Once participants are selected, we will confirm and circulate more details, and put them in touch with their paired Council Leader.
