Avia Speed Shop in Bridgend has become the first garage in Wales to
be given a prestigious employer award by Chwarae Teg.

At a ceremony last night, owner Hayley Pells was presented with an
Exemplar Employer Award. The garage, which has a 50:50 gender
split of men and women in qualified technical roles, has been
recognised for its work in bringing equality to the motor industry.

After the presentation Gill Owens from Chwarae Teg’s Agile Nation
scheme said;

“Motor mechanic is a very under represented career
choice for women, so it’s wonderful to see, not only a managing
director being female, but also Hayley employing 50% male and
female employees.”

It was a real honour for Hayley to receive the award. She said, “It’s
really important to the business to encourage diversity. The Award is
really important to us and it has improved the business as a whole”.

In the last month, Avia Speed Shop has also been accredited by the
Motor Ombudsman, a kite marked organisation affiliated with
Trading Standards, showing its commitment to high standards and a
fair industry for both consumers and employees alike.
