We are pleased to announce that Gower College Swansea are our performance sponsor at this year’s Womenspire Awards!
We spoke to Information Officer – Samantha Crowley, about the organisation and what it means to them to be part of Womenspire18!

Q1. Tell us about your organisation

Better Jobs, Better Futures is a fully funded employability programme delivered by Gower College Swansea, which aims to support people to gain, retain and progress within employment. Through employment and career support tailored to individual needs, the programme prepares individuals to access local job opportunities and longer-term career pathways. The programme also offers a range of recruitment and workforce support to businesses in and around the Swansea area, supporting them to develop and expand their workforce and, in doing so, to create more opportunities for people in Swansea to gain, retain and progress within employment.

Q2. Why are you supporting the awards?

Supporting women to progress within employment is a key aim of the Better Jobs, Better Futures programme. Celebrating the achievements of women from all backgrounds and stages in life or work is at the heart of the Better Jobs, Better Futures ethos and it is our privilege to be able to participate in showcasing the remarkable accomplishments of women across Wales.

Q3. Why does gender equality matter to you?

Better Jobs, Better Futures supports underemployed and unemployed women in the Swansea area into sustainable employment. Promoting gender equality makes good business sense because apart from being the right and fair thing to do, adopting a culture of equality and fairness enhances a company’s reputation, making it a more attractive prospect for new talent within the workforce, as well as for the customers it serves. Businesses that demonstrate fair practices across their organisation can significantly improve overall employee morale and commitment, which not only changes attitudes within the workforce, but can also be a huge attraction to customers and other stakeholders.

Q4. Why do you support the work of Chwarae Teg?

The work that Chwarae Teg carries out to highlight gender equality and promote modern working practices is vital in promoting a Wales where women realise and fulfil their potential. As a major employer and educational institution in Swansea, Better Jobs, Better Futures and Gower College Swansea are committed to equality and diversity and strive to ensure that all students and clients have fair and equal opportunities to progress and succeed. Women continue to occupy lower paid, lower skilled and often part-time roles, limiting their involvement in the labour market and contribution to the Welsh economy, and Better Jobs, Better Futures supports the work of Chwarae Teg in order to share best practice and in the hope of working together to help women achieve and prosper in the workplace and in life.
